Against the Scaling of Walls: A Prayer for Epiphany
Written on January 6, 20201.
In the face of domestic terrorism at the Capitol.
God of Revelation,
on this day when we see
the violence of Empire
rage in halls of earthly power-
Scaling walls, destroying property,
seeding dissension, disregarding humanity-
Open our eyes clearly
to the life and way of Jesus,
that we might be freed from tyranny.
Help us to seek You, like the Magi-
unlikely worshippers
treading softly, persistently, curiously
onward
toward a realm in which
all living creatures are united to bow low,
before a King who lifts the humble, feeds the hungry,
and turns the world upside own.
And continue to topple the ways of Herod-
bringing an end to compulsions that
climb for power,
grasp for control,
hold on to delusion,
and choose violent retribution
in the destruction of dignity
and the slaughter of innocent life.
In your mercy, grant us dreams
that guide us safely
away from reigns of violence
and lead us more deeply into your Way
or truth, justice, and love.
Grant us the grace of Epiphany this day
as we wait on you to
heal your land and
free your people.
